Dissecting Dreams with Dali and Other Artists in New Exhibit

A new exhibit is shaping up to be an insightful look at how artists have depicted the dream experience for over 500 years. Showcasing the work of 15 artists from the 16th through 20th centuries, The Shape of Dreams opens Friday, November 25, 2022 and runs through Sunday, April 30, 2023 at The Dali Museum in St. Pete. Artists featured include Paul Delvaux, Pat Steir, Philip Guston, Max Beckmann, Lodovico Carracci, and Odilon Redon.

The museum’s new exhibition examines how artists have translated dreams onto the canvas and how dreamers become consumed with the true meaning behind these dreams. The Shape of Dreams features art on loan from museums across the country including the National Gallery of Art, Detroit Institute of Arts, The New Orleans Museum of Art, Saint Louis Art Museum, Hirshhorn Museum & Sculpture Garden, Chicago Art Institute, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.  The exhibition seeks to understand how these artists’ expressions over the centuries have shaped human imagination. The exhibition is organized by The Dalí and curated by Dr. Hank Hine, Executive Director at the museum.

The Shape of Dreams is a powerful exploration through painting of how we understand ourselves and the world,” says Dr. Hine. “Are dreams useful? Are they prophetic? Do they tell us things about ourselves that we did not know? The Dalí invites visitors to heighten their awareness and attention to the world of dream — an intense element of the human experience so central to our personal lives.”

The Shape of Dreams is accompanied by a full-color catalog, The Shape of Dreams: Five Centuries of Painted Dreams from the Divine, Mythology & the Mind, and features an expanded selection of dream-inspired works by celebrated artists and an essay by Dr. Hine.

The Dalí Museum is home to over 2,000 works representing every phase of the surrealist artist’s personal life and creative work. The Museum is a not-for-profit organization with active missions to preserve the legacy of Salvador Dali for future generations and to act as a cultural community resource and partner for the local community as well as the international art world.
