Friday Afternoon Movie at Bernardsville Library: “The Shape of Water”

October 26 @ 2:00 pm – 4:30 pmNJ United States + Google MapFree

Join us to watch “The Shape of Water” (2017) at Bernardsville Public Library on Friday, October 26 at 2:00 pm. The movie is an other-worldly fairy tale, set against the backdrop of Cold War era America circa 1962. In the hidden high-security government laboratory where she works, lonely Elisa (Sally Hawkins) is trapped in a life of isolation. Elisa’s life is changed forever when she and co-worker Zelda (Octavia Spencer) discover a secret classified experiment. A.O. Scott, movie critic for The New York Times, described “The Shape of Water” as “partly a code-scrambled fairy tale, partly a genetically modified monster movie, and altogether wonderful.” Viewers are encouraged to linger after the film showing to talk about it. Ed English will provide a brief document to start the discussion, and we always have spirited conversations about character, motivation and style! Bernardsville Library’s movie series is funded by gifts to the Friends of the Bernardsville Library. The movies are selected for cultural enrichment and for appeal to a wide variety of tastes and interests in the community. With the next film, “West Side Story” (1961), we mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of Leonard Bernstein who wrote the score. Inspired by Learn More …Find out more »

Witchcraft Through the Ages

October 30 @ 7:00 pm – 8:30 pmNJ United States + Google MapFree

Just in time for Halloween, on Tuesday, October 30 at 7:00 pm at Bernardsville Public Library, Prof. Deborah Hoeflinger will discuss witchcraft from the 1600s, when people were really chasing after witches and burning them at the stake, to today’s beliefs. She’ll talk about what caused people to believe in witches, what kind of people were accused of being witches, how they were treated, and what caused the witch craze to subside. From 1450 to 1750, thousands of people were tried as witches. In times when bad luck and illness had no obvious cause, it was convenient to blame witches, and catastrophic events like the Black Death fueled hysteria because there was no satisfactory explanation of the cause at the time. Even today, there are parts of the world where people still believe in witchcraft and hunt down anyone suspected of participating in it. Deborah Hoeflinger is an adjunct professor of History at County College of Morris. She holds a B.A. in Social Science from Montclair State University as well as a Master’s Degree in Political Science and one in Reading Education from the same school. She is retired from Butler High School where she taught History for over 30 Learn More …Find out more »
