Join us to watch “JANE” (2017), an unprecedented, intimate portrait of Jane Goodall, at Bernardsville Public Library on Friday, September 28 at 2:00 pm. Goodall was a trailblazer who defied the odds to become one of the world’s most admired conservationists. Drawing from over 100 hours of never-before-seen footage tucked away in the National Geographic archives for over 50 years, award-winning director Brett Morgen tells the story of JANE, a woman whose chimpanzee research challenged the male-dominated scientific consensus of her time and revolutionized our understanding of the natural world. David Rooney of the Hollywood Reporter described the documentary: “Transcends the boundaries of both nature films and biographies. Its epic elements of adventure, romance, and spiritual connection possess a sweep equal to any narrative film. A wondrous, moving, and truly stirring portrait that puts us right there with Goodall to share in her discoveries, propelled by the majestic sounds of Philip Glass. This is a truly stirring legacy portrait.” Viewers are encouraged to linger after the film showing to talk about it. Ed English, head of the Friends’ movie committee, will provide a brief discussion document, and we always have spirited discussions about character, motivation and style! September 29 @ 8:00 pm$39 – $69

Legal Immigrant, a collection of musings on his 10 years as a U.S. citizen, growing older, and what it feels like to be an immigrant in today’s America (regardless of your prefix) begins with a show-stopping opening of Kander & Ebb’s “The Singer,” Stephen Sondheim’s “Old Friends,” and “Not A Day Goes By” from Merrily we Roll Along then “Losing My Mind” from Follies—all combined into one American musical theatre giants’ mash up! The show continues in a style Alan calls “a true old-fashioned cabaret, a smorgasbord of genres, styles, and tales; laughter, tears and, of course, provocation!” He will cover songs made famous by female musical legends as diverse as Pink, Edith Piaf, Adele, and Marlene Dietrich. Ever wanted to hear Schubert and Peggy Lee together in one song? You will! Scottish treasures Robert Burns and The Proclaimers will make an appearance, and there might even be a Disney Princess medley sung without a drop of irony. The evening will end with Cumming inviting the audience to sing along with him to one of America’s best known and, in his opinion, most maligned anthems!Find out more »
