The Tampa Bay Symphony (TBS), under Music Director and Conductor Mark Sforzini, will present an exciting program for its Spring concerts on Sunday, April 30, at 2:30 p.m. in Ferguson Hall at the Straz Center in Tampa and on Tuesday, May 2 at 8 p.m. at the Palladium, 253 Fifth Ave. N in St. Petersburg.
The winner of the 6th Annual International Composition Competition, Austin Ali, from Los Angeles, CA, will have his piece Defiant Overture performed as a World Premiere. This year’s competition had two requirements for the composers: the piece had to be written in 2022, and the composition needed to tie into one of the themes of Ukraine, War and/or Freedom. There were 49 entries received from 17 different countries.
The winner of the 37th Jack Heller Young Artist Competition, Elisabeth Thomashoff, will perform the Shostakovich Piano Concerto No. 2 in F Major, Op. 102. Ms. Thomashoff was born in Vienna, Austria and started piano at the age of four. She is currently in her sophomore year of her Piano Performance Bachelor of Music in the studio of Dr. Roberta Rust at the Lynn Conservatory of Music.
The program concludes with Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6 in B-minor, Opus 74 “Pathétique”. Tickets are $20 for adults and free for students, who must show student ID if they are 18 or over. For additional information, please visit the website: www.TampaBaySymphony.org.
