Steve Lane, executive director of Florida Songwriters Association, is passionate about helping songwriters and artists in Florida succeed. “We’re educating these artists about the industry, from royalties to management to publishing to licensing,” he says. “There are so many talented people here, and this is a business for them.”
The 501(c)(3) nonprofit, which Lane founded in 2018, “is dedicated to motivating and educating both aspiring and professional songwriters throughout the State of Florida and beyond.” The organization hosts several events each year, including four previous roundtable events and the first Florida Songwriters Festival in March 2022. A fifth roundtable is in the works.
Each Florida Songwriters Association roundtable brings songwriters, artists, and producers together to enhance each other’s works. Speakers are invited to provide industry insight and knowledge about topics like publishing, royalties, copyrights, and how to properly submit a song. Artists are offered the opportunity to talk directly with professionals from Spotify, MLC (Mechanical Licensing Collective), and different organizations that are looking for songs to pitch for TV, movies, commercials, or video game placements. Pitches are announced, and songwriters are each given the chance to play part of a song in exchange for feedback.
So at the roundtable,” Lane says, “we’re networking, we’re educating, and we’re making music together.”
Lane hopes to have the fifth roundtable in Miami, possibly in August or September. The event will be held live but also streamed so people who cannot attend in person can still watch. “It’s fun, it’s educational, and it motivates our members because when they leave, they’re energized, and they leave with knowledge,” Lane says.
Each month, Florida Songwriters Association will join with Destination Tampa Bay to introduces a performing artist spotlights featuring one up-and-coming artist who shows great promise and potential. The artist is featured on the Destination Tampa Bay and the Florida Songwriter’s website(s) and in social media. Music of all genres and styles from across the state will be represented. The artist must be a member of the songwriters association to be considered.
Destination Tampa Bay will be the exclusive representatives working with Steve Lane to introduce readers to these musical artists who are chosen for the honor as they are announced. Destination Tampa Bay started to feature visual artist every month about a year and a half ago. Now, Destination Tampa Bay will be excited to promote local performing artist as well!
