First Annual Poetry Out Loud Competition

The Marcia P. Hoffman School of the Arts at Ruth Eckerd Hall holds their first annual Poetry Out Loud competition. Poetry Out Loud is a national poetry recitation competition for high school students and is administered in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts, Poetry Foundation, and the state and jurisdictional arts agencies. Marcia P. Hoffman School of the Arts student Jeffery Walker won first place in the competition and will advance to the state-level finals on Saturday, March 11 at the University of South Florida. Through the generous donation of Mr. Tom Free, all four finalists received a reward check for their outstanding work.

“It is an honor to be participating in this special program, bringing a new artistic experience to our students and shining the spotlight on the theatrics of poetry. We congratulate this year’s winners and look forward to keeping Poetry Out Loud on our campus for years to come,” said Marcia P. Hoffman Vice President & Chief Education and Community Engagement Officer Sharon Reid-Kane, Ed.D.

Poetry Out Loud is a national arts education program that encourages the study of great poetry by offering free educational materials and a dynamic recitation competition for high school students across the country. This program helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about literary history and contemporary life. Since 2005, Poetry Out Loud has grown to reach more than 4.1 million students and 68,000 teachers from 17,000 schools and organizations in every state, American Samoa, the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Each school holds a recitation contest to determine the school champion. The Marcia P. Hoffman School of the Arts is proud to be part of this wonderful program.

First Place Winner Jeffery Walker Will Advance to State Finals:

The four finalists include Jeffery Walker (first place), Kaitlyn Moss (second place), Elizabeth Gonzalez (third place) and Olivia Whittington (fourth place). All participants were judged on physical presence, voice and articulation, dramatic appropriateness, evidence of understanding and overall performance.
