Valspar Tournament– Three Times in a Row!
The waiting is over, a longer than usual 25 months of waiting, as the 2021 Valspar Championship kicks off on Thursday where even defending champion Paul Casey has waited 25 months to defend his last win in 2018 and 2019 (This year would be a Three-fer!)
Paul Casey will seek to win a PGA TOUR event three times in a row after his triumphs on the Copperhead in 2018 and 2019. It has been done eight times previously in the last 40 years, six of them by Tiger Woods. The most recent occurrence was Steve Stricker at the John Deere Classic in 2009-10-11.
Paul Casey Is Feeling Confident
Meeting virtually with the media on Wednesday, Paul Casey talked about the situation. “I’m excited to finally be back, and I’m sure everyone else is, too. It is a great event. It is one I have won back-to-back, and I am looking for a third. I feel like my game is good.”
After soliciting suggestions from his on-line followers, Casey has chosen “POPEYE” to go on his caddie bib as part of the tournament’s designation for PGA TOUR Fun in the Sun.
If Casey is successful, it will not be the first three-peat in his illustrious career, as he captured three consecutive conference championships (then the Pac-10) while playing at Arizona State.
Last week’s rain has left the Copperhead Course (LEFT) a bit soft at the moment to the pros discerning eyes, but World #2 Justin Thomas sees the possibility that things could change. “I think they’re pretty receptive right now, but I think as the week goes on, if we continue to get weather like this, they could get very firm come the weekend, which would make it extremely difficult.”
Added World #1 Dustin Johnson, “I think it’s a great event. You do not have to shoot way under par. You just shoot a couple under each day, and you’re going to have a chance to win on Sunday.”
Johnson and Thomas will be playing together at 1:11 pm off the 1st tee, along with Joaquin Niemann. Casey, paired with Gary Woodland and Jason Kokrak, begins his quest for a third title at 7:50 a.m. off the 10th tee. Valspar’s Back to Bright
The second part of Valspar’s Back to Bright initiative began on Wednesday when veteran pro Brandt Snedeker found his name selected from among the 156 pros in the field who had signed a Valspar paint can at the 18th green.
With the selection, Snedeker earned the right to sponsor a colorful mural at a site of his choosing to brighten a part of a community. Although an exact location has not been determined, Snedeker will find an appropriate location in his hometown of Nashville.
Last week, a colorful mural by local muralist Zulu Painter was unveiled at the North Greenwood Recreation Center in Clearwater.
The Back to Bright murals are sponsored by Valspar which is using the power of color and art to promote joy, inspiration and a brighter future and promote “togetherness”.
