In Outback Bowl 2021 at Raymond James Stadium
The University of Indiana Hoosiers will take on the Ole Miss Rebels in this year’s Outback Bowl 2021 at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa. Tickets are now on sale through Ticketmaster for the January 2 Outback Bowl 2021. The bowl is celebrating its 35th Anniversary and will kick off at 12:30 p.m. ET on ABC TV at Raymond James Stadium.
Indiana University will represent the Big Ten. The Hoosiers finished second in the conference’s East Division with a season record of 6-1, just behind conference champion Ohio State with 6-0. The Buckeyes defeated West Division champions Northwestern in the conference playoffs.
Ole Miss Rebels played a tough SEC schedule in their 4-5 season and placed Number Four in SEC’s West Division. Among their losses was a high-scoring 63-48 defeat by the nation’s number-one-ranked team from the University of Alabama. Both teams in this year’s Outback Bowl 2021 had limited schedules due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
“We are very excited to extend an invitation to Indiana University and the University of Mississippi to play in this year’s Outback Bowl,” said Outback Bowl 2021 Chair Rita Lowman. “These are two exciting teams with local ties that should produce a great match-up that fans are really going to enjoy watching.”
Both coaches have coached previously in Florida with Indiana’s head Coach Tom Allen having spent time at Temple Heights High School and Armwood High School, and Ole Miss Coach Lane Kiffin coaching at Florida Atlantic University from 2017-2019.
“It is a tremendous honor to play in the 35th Outback Bowl for 2021 against a great opponent in Ole Miss,” stated Indiana Head Coach Tom Allen. “Our players, coaching staff, medical staff and everyone associated with our team worked hard to navigate through this difficult season, and I am so happy everyone is getting rewarded for their efforts. Making our second-straight January bowl game shows where we are at as a program, and we are not done yet. We look forward to one more opportunity to represent Hoosier Nation! LEO.”
In addition to instituting limited seating, face-covering, and no-tailgating policies recommended by the Tampa General Hospital, Raymond James Stadium has many new health and safety upgrades, including touchless facilities, cashless payment systems, and 700+ hand sanitizer and wash stations. Most of the usual special events related to the Outback Bowl have been cancelled for this year, but planners are already working on plans for Outback Bowl 2022. Tickets can be purchased online at www.ticketmaster.com. Seating is limited to 20% of capacity at Raymond James Stadium. The stadium has initiated numerous safety improvements and protocols in safety for 2021.
Tampa’s Outback Bowl 2021 is one of the leading bowl games at the end of the college football season. Of course, the College Football Playoffs top the list with the top four ranked teams in the country meeting on January 1 for a chance to become national champions. Number One-ranked Alabama will take on Notre Dame in the Rose Bowl at 3 p.m., while Number Two Clemson will play Ohio State in the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans.
“We look forward to representing our university on this national stage against a top-10 opponent in Indiana,” said Ole Miss Coach Lane Kiffin. “The Outback Bowl is a premier postseason destination, and I’m excited for our players to experience this trip. Tampa is a special place for our family. My parents spent many years there, and I attended a number of games in the Big Sombrero when I was younger. It will be great to be back in the Bay.”
Instead of being played in Pasadena, California, this year’s Rose Bowl will be played in the home of the Dallas Cowboys. It is only the second time in a century-long history that the “Granddaddy of Them All” will be played outside Pasadena. It is also not immediately clear whether the game will maintain its “Rose Bowl” name for this year’s event.
