Coffee & Conversation with Julia Buntaine Hoel

Get ready for the next Coffee & Conversation with Julia Buntaine Hoel. Hanging out, drinking delicious coffee, talking about art… ahhhh, that’s the life! Well, that WAS the life at least for an hour or so each month at the Dunedin Fine Art Center’s Coffee and Conversation series, sponsored by DFAC’s Sterling Society.

Times change and so do our pleasures. So many of them have become virtual.  That doesn’t need to lessen the joy in connecting with artists you may know or have always wanted to meet! You can still enjoy the insights as each month’s invited guest holds forth on their own area of expertise, as the inaugural virtual Coffee & Conversation last month proved… You’ll just have to pour your own coffee!

Tuesday, November 10th, 2020 at 12 noon, the series turns to DFAC’s current Vespertine exhibition for inspiration. Artist, professor, and nonprofit leader Julia Buntaine Hoel is the result.  In her presentation, “Exploring Science Through Art,” Julia will give a brief overview of her artistic practice. Hoel, who holds a double BA in Neuroscience and Art, creates interdisciplinary visual art inspired by the brain’s biology, the mechanisms of memory and perception, and the phenomenon of consciousness. Her works reveal hidden layers of beauty and meaning in the brain and self.

Julia Buntaine Hoel is a conceptual artist and founding Executive Director of SciArt Initiative. Julia attained her double BA in neuroscience and sculpture from Hampshire College,  her post-baccalaureate certificate in Studio Art from Maryland Institute College of Art, and her MFA of Fine Arts from the School of Visual Arts. She has exhibited nationally and internationally including shows in New York City, Washington D.C., Amherst, Baltimore, Seattle, Madison, Princeton, London, Toronto, Knokke, Sofia, and others. Her work can be found in the  permanent  collection of New York University and Johns Hopkins University, and has been featured in The New York Times, Forbes, Smithsonian Magazine, and Hyperallergic, among others.  She also teaches, consults, curates, and frequently writes about art, and currently holds positions at Pratt Institute, Montserrat College of Art, and Merrimack College.
