Lightning Bolts 4 vs. Bruins 3 in OT from Toronto’s Scotiabank Arena. Tampa Bay Lightning Bolts leveled its best-of-seven, Second Round series against Boston 1-1 following a 4-3 overtime victory in Game 2 from Toronto’s Scotiabank Arena. The Tampa Bay Lightning have defeated the Bruins in six of their last seven playoff meetings and are 2-1 against the Bruins during the 2020 Playoffs (includes Round Robin matchup). This was an exciting game where the Bolts played its third overtime game of the 2020 Playoffs in a best-of-seven series and improved to 3-0.
The Lightning have won five straight overtime games in playoff best-of-seven series dating back to the 2016 Playoffs. Some of the highlights include Ondrej Palat, who scored the game-winner 4:40 into the overtime session, hopping on a loose puck in front of the net and sending it past Bruins goalie Jaroslav Halak (35-of-39 saves) for the 4-3 final. Palat netted his first goal of the 2020 Playoffs and scored his first career playoff overtime goal.
Palat scored his 22nd goal all-time in the playoffs for his career and Palat’s game-winning, overtime goal was assisted by Yanni Gourde and Pat Maroon. And, both Gourde and Maroon recorded their first points of the Second Round.
Boston netted the game’s opening goal, Nick Ritchie jabbing a puck underneath Andrei Vasilevskiy’s leg pad and slipping it over the goal line to put Boston in front 1-0 at 3:14.
Tampa Bay Lightning thought it had tied the game at 5:04 of the opening period after Barclay Goodrow tipped Braydon Coburn’s shot from the point past Halak. However, Boston challenged the goal and review determined Brayden Point did not legally tag up at the blue line prior to Goodrow entering the offensive zone, negating the goal.
Yet, the Lightning Bolts did tie the score 1-1 later in the first period, Blake Coleman diving to reach a pass from Zach Bogosian and redirect it past Halak at 12:42 of the first.
Other Playoff Game Highlights:
– Coleman scored his second goal of the 2020 Playoffs (also: Game 5 of 1st Rd. vs. CBJ) and second goal as a member of the Lightning.
– Zach Bogosian supplied the primary assist for his third assist of the postseason. Bogosian recorded his first assist of the Second Round and has three assists over the last five games.
– Barclay Goodrow also picked up an assist, his second of the 2020 Playoffs. Goodrow earned his first point of the Second Round.
– Boston retook the lead at 14:33 of the second period, Brad Marchand scoring on the power play to put the Bruins ahead 2-1.
– Tampa Bay answered quickly, Nikita Kucherov getting a tip past Halak on a shot from the right dot by Kevin Shattenkirk to tie the game 2-2 at 15:28 of the second, just 55 seconds after Boston’s go-ahead goal. Kucherov netted his first goal of the Second Round and third goal of the playoffs.
– Kucherov scored his 32nd career playoff goal to pull within one of tying Martin St. Louis as Tampa Bay’s all-time leading playoff goal scorer and has posted a point in 30 of the last 34 games he’s played going back to the regular season, posting 19 goals and 27 assists over that stretch.
– Kevin Shattenkirk earned the primary assist for his second assist of the Second Round and third assist of the playoffs. Shattenkirk pushed his point streak to four games (1-3—4 pts.) to set a new career long for a playoff point run.
– Brayden Point also picked up an assist on Kucherov’s tying goal for his second assist of the Second Round and seventh assist of the postseason. Point has recorded at least one point in nine of 10 games so far this postseason and continues to pace the Lightning for goals and scoring in the 2020 Playoffs (5-7—12 pts.).
– Tampa Bay took its first lead of the series on Blake Coleman’s second goal of the game, this one coming on a breakaway off a stretch pass from Victor Hedman to make it 3-2 Lightning at 10:40 of the third. Coleman has scored three goals this postseason, all in the last three games.
– Coleman has four points over the last three games (3-1—4 pts.). Coleman registered his first career multi-goal game in the playoffs and eighth overall (reg. season and playoffs).
– Victor Hedman supplied the lone assist for his first helper of the Second Round and third this postseason. Hedman has three points so far in the Second Round series (2-1—3 pts.).
– Boston’s Brad Marchand tied the game 3-3 with 3:58 remaining to force overtime.
– Andrei Vasilevskiy stopped 22-of-25 shots to earn the victory and improve to 7-3 this postseason. Vasilevskiy collected his 22nd career playoff win and moved to first place among Tampa Bay’s all-time playoff goalie wins leaders, passing Ben Bishop and Nikolai Khabibulin.
– The Lightning went with an 11 forward, seven defensemen alignment for the first time this postseason. Braydon Coburn and Luke Schenn both earned their first start of the 2020 Playoffs in Game 2.
– Coburn skated in his 63rd career playoff game with the Lightning to tie Vincent Lecavalier and Martin St. Louis for eighth place among Tampa Bay’s all-time playoff games leaders. Coburn made his 135th career playoff appearance and has skated in more postseason games than any other player on the Lightning roster.
Tampa Bay outshot Boston 39-25. Ondrej Palat, Blake Coleman, Victor Hedman and Nikita Kucherov all had four shots to pace the Bolts. The Lightning improved to 80-67 all-time in the playoffs and 43-34 under head coach Jon Cooper.
